Recovery of tourism in Europe

Recovery of tourism in Europe

Although tourism sector in Europe continues to move towards full recovery, in its growth has been a decline. This shows European Commission report on tourism trends and expectations of tourism in the third quarter of 2011. According to the commission, the debt crisis in the Eurozone and the possibility of returning the U.S. economy into recession, are the main factors that will influence the slower pace development of tourism in 2012.

Positive sides:
According to the data, in September airlines in the Eurozone enjoy a very large increase in demand for flights - 8% more than the same period of 2010. With one exception, the weekly increase in the demand for flights is over 6%.

The hotels also enjoyed growth in employment - in August they have reported 3.7% increase in employment. The interest towards the Baltic countries and Eastern European destinations is great. Southern Europe is also doing well, led by Spain, Cyprus and Malta, as in the whole region the employment rate is 5.2% higher than in August 2010, the demand for reservations for hotels in Eastern and Southern Europe notes 4% growth, with an increase in employment by 7.3% and 5.2%.

Despite the positive data, the recovery of tourism in Europe to pre-crisis levels is meeting many risks. The main concerns are related to the crisis in the Eurozone and the fears of new recession in the U.S. economy. This is the main reason why the European Commission for Tourism predicts noticeable slowdown in the growth of tourism on the continent in 2012.

Expectations are that by the end of 2011 international visits to Europe will surpass the record registered in 2008. However, the economic situation is extremely challenging for the recovery of tourism. The Commission expects that domestic tourism in Europe will be greatly slowed – up to 2.3% is the expected increase in 2012 compared with 5.6% in 2011.
